It seems to me that the key to appreciating historical dates is their relationships: the Crab Nebula supernova was the same year as the Catholics split from the Orthodox; Roger Bacon died only 20 years after Aquinas; Columbus discovered the New World a mere 52 years after Gutenberg demonstrated movable type; Abraham, Moses, David, Ezra and Jesus lived at roughly 500-year intervals. I like picking dates as pegs and working from there.

A couple weeks ago, I didn't want to go home after church, so I took a 15 minute drive down a section of a road I'd never been down. It's amazing how fast Edwardsville turns into nothing.

But the point is that if you can spare ten or fifteen miles worth of gas, this is an okay substitute. An audio book might not be appropriate, but relaxing music might do the job. Dunno.

Or maybe, you could do it all in haiku (or just poem) form, which would get your creativity flowing with the material, and then translate it into academese.
