The Flu

I have it. It's not fun.

Fe

Today is the day before Halloween, which for anyone who goes to school and doesn't mind looking ridiculous in the public sphere, is dress-up day. I went as Iron Man:

I don't think I look ferocious at all, though maybe a little ferrous. Although, as evidenced by the circles under my eyes, I'm not very well-rusted.
Think it's ridiculous that I was a woman dressed as Iron MAN? It's a bit ironic, I admit.

Time for me to steel away-- I have a pressing engagement.

(Steamed at all the puns? Could have been worse-- I didn't even get into Cold War Europe or golf clubs.)

Rain

It is raining like CRAZY in Kirksville. When I walked to my first class (thankfully wearing weatherproofed boots and carrying a massive umbrella), there was easily 3 inches of water on the ground, flowing downhill quite fast. And the rain hasn't really stopped since then: most of the quad is flooded, the sidewalks are hidden under leaves and water, and it's still overcast.
Piglet's song is running through my head.

Deceit

I've spent years thinking I was bad at memorizing dates in history classes. But you know what? I'm quite good at it. I'm good with numbers; I don't know how I deceived myself for so many years.

In the Mood for a Road Trip

I'm in the mood for a road trip... I just want to drive for hours, and listen to an audio book, and have no cares or worries for a while.
But I have nowhere to go, no time to go anywhere, and no money to waste on destinationless gas.
I'll just have to hold out until November.
The downside of a place like Kirksville is that EVERYTHING is within a fifteen-minute drive.

Ridiculous

I've been watching a lot of Lois and Clark recently, and it's utterly absurd. I love it. The acting is mediocre, calling the plots far-fetched would be generous, the special effects are chuckle-worthy. I love it.

Great Weekend

Friday, I forced myself to stay awake until 8:00, and then slept for 13 hours. Great way to recover from the week.
Saturday, I did all the homework I have due on Monday and Tuesday, and some of Wednesday's work as well! So Tuesday I'll be able to spend time studying for this week's history exam.
Today, I sang at church (very energetic music, and a lot of sightsinging). Next up is going to see The Importance of Being Ernest, my favorite play. Then the Pi Delta Phi French dinner, then the senior recital of two good friends, then a meeting.
Busy, but good.

Hear about that new pirate movie?

It's rated "Arrrr!"

Semi-Done

Well, I finished writing my paper, with the exception of the summary of previous research. So I won't need to do too much more writing from this point.

Lots of revising left, and I need to read Things Fall Apart by tomorrow morning... I read it in high school, but don't remember it at all.

Today, in Haiku

Research for a month
Throw together an outline...
Undergrad thesis.

Six pages complete
Six more, minimum, are left.
Begone, writer's block!

Well, I hope that my
Paper will turn out better
Than these lame haiku.

You're (figuratively) looking at...

... a future librarian!
I just got into the school of library and information science at Dominican University. So long as they give me some scholarships, I'm going!

Perfect job for a book addict, n'est-ce pas?

The Week of No Free Time

Monday's break: do homework for later class.
Evening: class, dinner, work, then working like crazy on my research paper

Tuesday: class, then lunch and work, then working like crazy on my research paper and doing the large amounts of homework due on Wednesday

Wednesday: classes, homework, class, then working like crazy on my research paper and neglecting sleep and other inconsequential things like that.

Thursday: research paper due!
Thursday after classes and work: a few hours left to read about 300 pages worth of material for Friday.

And then I'll sleep (and do more homework!) all weekend.

Ouch...

More Bread!

That bread is SO GOOD. So I made another two loaves today. Well, actually, I prepared the dough for another two loaves, then went off babysitting, giving my mom instructions on how to finish them. So they get to keep one loaf, and I get to bring one back to school tomorrow! On the downside, I have to go back to school tomorrow.

Caution: Dough will be STICKY

Today is World Bread Day! Who knew. I'd had bread on my to-do list for a week anyway, ignorant of today's apparent holiday.

So I'm making this. And at the part where you knead the dough and resist the urge to add more flour, boy is it sticky! Because of that fact alone, this is one of the most difficult breads I've made.

A Brilliant Idea

It's cold. It's raining. It's cloudy. It's a nasty day out. It's my first day back of Midterm Break.

OOOH! I know!

First, in the morning, I'll go to two shoe stores (only a moderate amount of outdoor walking).
Then I'll go out to lunch with Mom (indoors).
Then we'll go to two outdoor malls!

This'll be fun.

(Actually, these plans were made days ago. We can deal with the weather.)

Cut

Today I'm going to cut a class, and I feel horrible. It's Midterm Break, and if I stayed for my last class I would be leaving town at 6pm-- and therefore getting home at one in the morning, and driving for several hours when it's raining and the temperature is close to zero. Seemed a bit dangerous, so I'm not going to go to that class. Which means that I'll be leaving at 2:30, arriving home close to nine. I can't wait to get home.
I do hate cutting class though. This is the second time I've done so in my entire university career.

Break

I need one. And I get one, starting tomorrow! As long as I get enough accomplished tonight, I won't have to do any homework for the next five days, while I'm at home for midterm break.

A Caring Professor

I have one professor who is very conscientious, and makes sure that her students have no reason to be unhappy or uncomfortable. Before assigning us a take-home test, she asked if anyone is Quaker, since we have to sign an oath that we didn't ask or receive help or consult any sources outside of our brain. And Quakers can't take oaths. She's awesome.

Snow

I bought a scraper/snow brush at Wal-Mart, and I splurged to get a super nice one. It's durable, not made of plastic, and has a telescoping handle. I'm sort of looking forward to the first snow of the year. Not looking forward to any of the snows after that, though...

Mint

Yesterday I bought isopropyl alcohol, since I was almost out of my bottle. And I spent an extra 28 cents to buy... wintergreen scented isopropanol. It smells slightly less nasty than the regular stuff, but after the alcohol evaporates, you're left with a slight minty smell. It's pretty awesome.

Gazump

It is possible to use the word "gazump" in the context of Afghani culture.

Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize, and I am pleased to say that even my hard-core Democrat friends agree that this is ridiculous. He might deserve it in a few years, but certainly not yet!

Attempting to Blog more Regularly

Maybe all I need to do is alter my ideas about what my blog should be. I think I'm too tied to doing travel diaries, and since I'm not traveling, I don't feel like I have anything worth saying. But if I stick to a couple of sentences, I think that there's something worth commenting on every day, and if not, I can share a joke.

So, since I have nothing to do for the next twenty three minutes, I am going to orchestrate a slight redesign and re-titling of this blog, and set up an e-mail reminder to post something every day.

We'll see how long this lasts...
