Misplaced adverb, anyone?
I was channel-surfing yesterday and listened to a snippet of a soap opera, a scene where a distraught woman was lamenting her son knowing something about her-- "He'd be better off believing I was still dead!" she cried. Good thing the TV can't see its watchers, because I'm sure I would have insulted her by bursting out laughing. I didn't know there were zombies on soaps.

You obviously never watched Passions...
Au contraire, mon ami! I once watched an episode of Passions, but this was something else (something about a life and living or loving or something... I don't remember its name) and so I was pleased by the lack of grammaticality. I did, of course, check to make sure it wasn't Passions. This was a "serious" soap.
